Germany

A perfect little lake town lost in the calm serenity of the Bavarian Alps, Schliersee feels like an older, slower Germany. A pastoral village, happily oriented around a glassy lake. Ludwig’s storybook Neuschwanstein castle is a short day trip away, as is Austria’s famous Salzburg.

Schliersee is a beautiful Bavarian city built around a large alpine lake, It is beautifully nestled in the pristine mountain scenery of the Bavarian Alps, which will take your breath away, whether they are covered in snow or bathed in the many colours of the Alpine Summer. In any season, Schliersee in the district of Miesbach, is a popular international holiday destination.

As it is far away from big cities and the daily grind, holiday makers find the best ways for recreation and enjoy the beautiful nature. Extensive sports and leisure facilities, offered in both summer and winter, attract additional visitors to this region in the heart of the Bavarian Alps. The typical Bavarian charming village invites you to take a leisurely stroll, and enjoy the cafes and restaurants serving excellent local dishes.

It is situated on the northeastern shore of the lake, offering picturesque views of the mountains, including the house-mountain Rotwand and the Wendelstein. Take a cable car and after a scenic drive you find yourself high in the mountains. Follow a trail leading you to mountain pastures with panoramic views and great food, and maybe use a toboggan run to return to the foot of the mountain. Go on a leisure boat tour, visit neighboring towns and sightseeing spots or pamper yourself in a spa.

Bavarian traditions are alive in Schliersee and happily shared with all guests. On top of the Folklore Evenings many sportive events and festivals are held throughout the year. In June it’s about sport, when the Schliersee Alpine Triathlon is held. This is a German championship event and includes the Olympic distances of 1.5km swimming, 40km cycling and 10km running.

One of the most beautiful and colorful festivals in the Bavarian Oberland is held in August each year, in honor of the churches patron St. Sixtus. On this day fisherman come with their beautiful decorated wooden boats to the south bank of the Schliersee. Expect brass bands, colorful costumes and Bavarian Gemütlichkeit. Another event drawing visitors from near and far is the St. Leonhard Day, celebrated on the first Sunday after All Saints’ Day in November. Approximately 80 festively decorated carriages drawn by 4 horses, and filled with people in historical costumes, arrive to take part in the Pilgrimage day’s celebration, which include a mess, held in the open. And then it’s time again for the Advent season, when the townscape offers a fairy-tale backdrop to the numerous festive events and performances. Schliersee is worth a long vacation and rightfully earned its reputation as a popular recreational area in Bavaria and Germany.
