Stylish, cultured and good humoured; Italy, hailed as the world’s living art gallery, with its golden light, stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, has inspired artists for centuries. Italy offers the ultimate in culture and history, whether it’s art, music, wine, food, fashion or spectacular scenery.

Situated in Mediterranean Europe, Italy has land borders with France in the north-west, Switzerland and Austria in the north and Slovenia in the northeast.

The peninsula is surrounded by the Ligurian Sea, the Sardinian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea in the west, the Sicilian Sea and the Ionian Sea in the south and the Adriatic Sea in the east.

There is a great deal of variety in the Italian landscape, ranging from the turquoise waters of Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda offering one of Europe’s most beautiful stretches of sand, sea and sunshine, to the snow-covered slopes of the extraordinarily beautiful Dolomite mountains and everything in between – verdant valleys, the flowing river Po, and large serene lakes.

The principal islands are Sicilia, rising up to the great volcanic cone of Etna and Sardinia. The main archipelagos are the Tremiti Islands in the Adriatic Sea, the Tuscan Archipelago, the Pontine Islands, the Aeolian Islands and the Egadi Islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the coast of Sicilia.

Italy is one of the most popular vacation countries in Europe, all seasons being good for a visit. In general, Italy has a temperate Mediterranean climate, with warm summers and cool winters in the north and hot summers and mild winters in the south.

While Italy is a land celebrated for the arts, not the least among these is the art of hospitality. Throughout the country visitors can find vineyards and cellars to taste fine regional wines, workshops where crafts are produced by hand and friendlytrattorie where simple but superb dishes are served.

Famous for its food, Italy’s many regional cuisine, while remaining distinctive to their regions of origin, have undergone a pan-Italian fusion, evolving into a unique cuisine that is world famous. Coffee, beer and wine are of course magnificent countrywide.

Italy combines art, history, cultural and culinary experiences; and contemporary fashion with gorgeous natural landscapes – the land of ‘la dolce vita’, organised disorder, simple village life and sophisticated cities.
